Step 1: Master the Question Time

Take the time to rehearse your responses to common interview questions. Consider the following:

  • Reflect on your greatest strength and how it sets you apart.
  • Address your areas of improvement, highlighting how you actively work on them.
  • Share your effective strategies for handling stress and pressure.

  • Articulate why you are the ideal candidate for the position.
  • Share your future goals and aspirations.
  • Discuss your preference for working independently or as part of a team.

When the time comes, remember to ask insightful questions:

  • Inquire about the aspects of working for the company that employees appreciate.
  • Gain insight into the company culture and how it influences day-to-day operations.
  • Request a glimpse into the typical experiences of someone in your desired position.

Step 2: Attention to Detail

Confirm the interview details, including the date, time, and location. Research the best route to the venue and ensure you arrive on time. Additionally:

  • Familiarise yourself with the name of the interviewer(s).
  • Prepare multiple copies of your resume to bring along.
  • Select and lay out your interview attire the night before.

Step 3: Uncover the Organisation

Explore the background of the organisation to demonstrate your interest and understanding:

  • Discover the organisation’s history, noting its evolution over the years.
  • Understand the products or services they offer.
  • Research the company’s standing within the industry.
  • Stay informed about any expansion plans.
  • Explore the organisational structure.
  • Gauge the organisation’s commitment to making a positive impact in the community.

Step 4: Master the Etiquette

Impress from the moment you enter the premises:

  • Aim to arrive approximately 10 minutes early; remember, punctuality is crucial.
  • Greet everyone you encounter, from the receptionist to the interviewer, with respect and professionalism.
  • Maintain a polished and professional image while waiting, refraining from distractions on your phone.
  • Approach the interviewer with confidence, offering a firm handshake and a warm smile.
  • Adhere to the TENS rule: TOUCH (handshake), EYE CONTACT, NAME (use the interviewer’s name), and SMILE.
  • Wait for the interviewer’s invitation before taking a seat.
  • Exude confidence without crossing into arrogance; let your genuine abilities shine.
  • Listen attentively to each question and respond thoughtfully, taking your time.
  • Remember to ask the questions you have prepared, showcasing your interest and engagement.
  • Always express gratitude to the interviewer for their time and consideration.

Step 5: Embrace Self-Awareness

  • Identify and articulate your strengths and how they relate to the position.
  • Highlight the alignment between your skills and abilities and the requirements of the role and organisation.
  • Explore your core values and demonstrate how they resonate with the organisation’s mission.
  • Prepare a few success stories from your professional experience, utilising the STAR model (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
